I can’t control what the ball do man!

I’m not going to lie. . . I took this year’s first round playoff exit by the Mavs really hard. I was depressed after the Game 6 loss to the Spurs – I just knew we would force a Game 7 back in the friendly confines of the American Airlines Center in Dallas. ‘Not to be.  My expectations for the Mavs were so high this year – its devastating.  It’s taken me a whole week to be able to blog about this.

I don’t know what it is about us as fans that makes us take losses so hard and so personally. After all, I’m just a fan and I can’t control things.

I always got a kick out of a quote from Mav’s forward Josh Howard (so glad he got traded) after he dribbled the ball off his foot during a critical moment in last year’s playoffs; he said, and I quote: “I can’t control what the ball do man!” Actually he could control the ball – that’s why they teach Basketball players fundamentals…you know…like dribbling.

Anyway, I know I can’t control what the ball does, or the matchups, or Rick Carlise’s crazy substitution patterns. I can only root, cheer, and send out concern waves. I’ll be ready to do my part again next basketball season. In the meantime, Go Cowboys!

  1. One of the most important parts is the part of the “Clapper/Cheerer”. Go forth and multiply! :-)
    Yea Team Go!

  2. I love all of your blogs and am so glad to see you have pulled yourself up out of the doldrums. Ha!

  3. Keith, it’s refreshing to see that you’ve not abandoned your roots!!! As one who used to “bleed marroon”, I understand the post-game depression that comes over dedicated fans.

You know, there’s a sermon in this post somewhere…. The quote you have reminds me of the way people think about their lives, always throwing the blame on someone (or something) else. ‘Kind of reminds me of Genesis 3. If more people here in Santiago were basketball fans I’d probably use it in a lesson or sermon.

    Blessings to you and yours!!!

  4. Jerry Lynn – I must agree. The Mavs have still not lost a playoff game when I’ve been in attendance at the AAC (I’ve been to four).

Sherrel – I wouldn’t say I’ve come out of my depression yet but I’m getting there. There’s always next year, right?

Jeff- What do you mean you “used to bleed marron”; surely you haven’t forgotten your own roots! How would that translate in a sermon: “Tu no controlas lo que haga la pelota”?
